Position Summary
The Department Chair supervises full- and part-time faculty in teaching their courses, being responsive to students, remaining current in their respective discipline and ensuring their involvement in providing course feedback and participation in professional development activities. The Department Chair is also be expected to ensure the currency, relevance, and appropriateness of the curriculum as a whole and work with course leaders and the Assistant Dean of Curriculum in the development and maintenance of courses within assigned program.

Key Job Responsibilities
-Directly supervise full and part-time faculty including interviewing, hiring, and training; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

-Assist the Assistant Dean of Faculty with the scheduling of classes and assignment of faculty to the schedule.

-Review faculty performance to ensure maintenance of the classroom standards.

-Take a lead role in assigned course curriculum oversight in conjunction with course leaders and the Assistant Dean of Curriculum.

-Make recommendations to the Assistant Dean of Faculty as appropriate related to hiring, evaluation, and retention of faculty in assigned courses. Metrics include percentage of faculty with terminal degrees, student end of term survey results and GPA distribution in sections and courses.

-Contribute to the overall success of the University as a whole. Assessment will include positive working relationships with peers and external departments.

-Participate in student retention activities and provide a beginning point of contact for faculty with student escalation issues.

-Provide a meaningful learning experience for each student in every course.

-When needed a Lead Chair may be designated to assist the Assistant Dean of Faculty in supervising other Chairs.

-Perform other administrative and job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
-PhD or other terminal degree in Fire Science, Fire and Emergency Management Administration, Fire Protection Engineering, or Emergency Management.

-3-5 years' experience in post-secondary education (experience with online instruction is a plus).

-Microsoft Office Professional.

-Exceptional computer skills using Microsoft Office applications and adobe connect meeting technology.

-Excellent communication, organizational and time-management skills, and ability to work independently in a virtual environment with minimal supervision.

-Ability to work a flexible schedule.
