Description:
Walden University is a pioneer in student-centered distance education. An accredited graduate institution with a mission for social change, Walden is dedicated to high academic standards and helping students make a difference in their professions, organizations and communities.
Contributing faculty members serve in a part-time capacity to educate Walden University Students by effectively and proficiently using online technology and resources so that knowledge, information, feedback, and critique are imparted to and shared with students in thoughtful, carefully formulated, well written, and timely communications. This is accomplished in an environment that is respectful of student, the Faculty Member, Walden University, and the discipline in which the Faculty Member is involved. Faculty Members are expected to adhere to all Walden University Faculty expectations, which are clearly set forth to the Faculty Member at the start of his/her employment with the University.
Faculty holding contributing (part-time) appointments work from their home communities using the internet, telephone, fax, etc. The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership offers the Ph.D in Education, with a specialization area in Special Education. At this time, we have openings for individuals with knowledge in assessment of students with disabilities who are also English language learners, methodologies in the appropriate teaching strategies of children with special needs, evaluation of tests and measurements and the implementation of Response to Intervention (RtI), and early childhood/middle school special education.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Doctoral degree in Special Education or related field from an accredited institution.
Experience mentoring and instructing doctoral-level adult learners.
Experience working in an online instructional setting at the university level.
Familiarity with constructivist learning strategies.
Experience working with students from the variety of backgrounds that reflect Walden's mission of broad access to
education.
Demonstrated ability to conduct scholarly research.
Experience supervising student research including chairing and serving on dissertation committees
Strong written, oral and communication skills.
Must have access to and be comfortable in electronic communication environments.
Participation in our New Faculty Orientation will be required.
Some travel may be necessary
Three to five years of teaching experience at the degree level of the program is preferred
Commitment to advocating for the learning and development needs of students earning their degrees in a distance learning environment
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Part-time faculty provide direct academic instruction to Ph.D. students in the College of Education and Leadership. Duties may
include:
Mentoring students to become effective scholar-practitioners in education.
Assessing student work.
Teaching, developing, and revising online courses.
Participating in the University's national academic residency programs.
Serving on faculty governance, curriculum, and academic policy committees as needed.
May perform other duties and responsibilities that management may deem necessary from time to time.
Training
All new Faculty Members receive specific training from Walden University in the techniques teaching, use of an electronic learning platform, specifics of the policies, procedures and degree programs of the School or College in which they are going to teach, socialization into the Walden University culture, assessment of academic integrity of student work (including use of www.turnitin.com), and research supervision of theses and dissertations.
Course Teaching
Faculty Members are assigned a course, which is taught using the eCollege platform, and are responsible for interacting with students within this platform. Discussion Boards for classrooms are open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Although postings to the classroom may be done at any time of day, they must be completed in a timely manner in accordance with the Faculty Handbook or other criteria established by Walden University. Per the faculty handbook, responses to student questions must be posted within 48 hours. Faculty Members are required to verify the accuracy of student postings and submissions and to provide feedback and grades to students through eCollege.
Availability
Walden expects faculty to be reasonably accessible to students. Faculty members are expected to be available to students outside the course discussion board and in addition to providing substantive feedback on assignments and postings. Faculty members will publish their availability to students through course syllabi, instructor information in the classroom, and/or other appropriate documents. The university suggests regular and predictable availability, such as online office hours or regular online chats.
Residencies
Faculty Members may be required to attend Residencies held domestically or internationally, (Part-time faculty may, but are not required to attend), where they will teach intensives and colloquia, and facilitate school and university-wide discussions.
Knowledge Area Modules (KAM)
In certain programs, Faculty Members are also expected to participate in KAM instruction, in which they work one-on-one with Students in the development of the Learning Agreement and the KAM demonstration. Faculty Members are responsible for the provision of timely feedback, approval, assessment, and evaluation of each Student's work within the classroom.

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Incumbents will be evaluated, in part, based on performance of each essential function. Faculty members are required to have an adequate computer to handle an electronic learning platform, keyboard, pointing device, and computer monitor. All other tools are knowledge-based or training-based through Walden University. The Faculty Member must be able to use Microsoft Office products (MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint), zip software, and Adobe Acrobat and must have reliable Internet access as well as alternate access in cases where primary access becomes unavailable.
LICENSURE and/or CERTIFICATION:
Faculty Members must be appropriately credentialed, possess an earned degree from an accredited institution or recognized by a country's ministry of education in the discipline being taught, and may be expected to be licensed or license-eligible in order to teach in specific programs. Faculty Members must maintain their licenses and any appropriate certifications in order to continue to teach at Walden University. Faculty Members are also expected to maintain currency with research by reviewing articles, journals, and presentations. If participating in research, the Faculty Member may publish and acknowledge Walden University.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment, but may involve exposure to moderate noise levels. Work involves operation of personal computer equipment for six to eight hours daily and includes physical demands associated with a traditional office setting , e.g., walking, standing, communicating, and other physical functions as necessary.

The primary physical demands are handling a mouse, which requires reaching and handling, using a keyboard, which requires fingering, near vision (20 inches or less), and mid-range vision (more than 20 inches in distance) to focus on the computer monitor, or hard copy as is necessary. Depth perception (the judging of distances and spatial relationships) and visual accommodation (used to do near point work at varying distances) are not necessary to perform the work of the Faculty Member.

The New Teacher Project (TNTP) helps school districts and states fulfill the promise of public education by ensuring that all students-especially those from high-need communities-get excellent teachers. A national nonprofit organization founded by teachers, TNTP is driven by the knowledge that although great teachers are the best solution to educational inequality, the nation's education systems do not sufficiently prioritize the goal of effective teachers for all. In response, TNTP develops customized programs and policy interventions that enable education leaders to find, develop and keep great teachers and achieve reforms that promote effective teaching in every classroom. Since its inception in 1997, TNTP has recruited or trained approximately 37,000 teachers-mainly through its highly selective Teaching Fellows TM programs-benefiting an estimated 5.9 million students. TNTP has also released a series of acclaimed studies of the policies and practices that affect the quality of the nation's teacher workforce, most recently including The Widget Effect: Our National Failure to Acknowledge and Act on Differences in Teacher Effectiveness (2009). We are currently seeking four Training and Instruction Managers for our Georgia Teaching Fellows Program - these roles will eventually be based in program offices located in Augusta, Savannah, Columbus and Albany. These positions will work out of a home office temporarily if program office space is initially unavailable and are available immediately.
Note for candidates currently teaching: it is possible this role could be part time (15-20 hours a week) starting immediately and transitioning to a full time role by early June 2011.
The Program
In Georgia, The New Teacher Project is launching the Georgia Teaching Fellows (GTF) program to attract, train, develop and certify high quality individuals for partner school districts in/around Augusta, Columbus, Albany, and Savannah. Georgia Teaching Fellows aims to recruit outstanding recent college graduates and mid-career changers to commit to teaching in the state's most high-need public schools. After a rigorous pre-service training institute, Fellows will be prepared to assume full-time teaching positions in the fall of 2011.
Individuals selected into GTF participate in our comprehensive teacher certification program. All Fellows participate in a rigorous summer training institute with a classroom based component, in which they learn how to be effective teachers in high-need schools through a focus on instructional design and delivery and classroom management and culture. During the school year, GTF coordinates a 16-session seminar series, Teaching for Results, and other program administration activities as Fellows work toward their certification. Teaching for Results is designed to ensure participants are prepared to close the achievement gap by emphasizing proven approaches to improving student outcomes.
Fellows will earn certification by completing TNTP's Teaching for Results seminar series during their first year in the classroom and by completing our Assessment of Classroom Effectiveness (ACE) screen. Our program is distinguished from other alternative route programs by the quality of its pre-service training and year-long professional development program, as well as our focus on making certification decisions based on performance in the classroom and ability to impact student achievement.
Role and Responsibilities - Training and Instruction Manager
The Training and Instruction Manager is responsible for the successful execution of all instructional programming for the Georgia Teaching Fellows Program in their respective region, resulting in the contract meeting its individual goals for the implementation and successful completion of the year-long certification training program. Specifically, the Training and Instruction Manager will:
1. Prepare and execute a high quality certification experience by
* Leading the recruitment, on-boarding and management of Seminar Leaders (SLs)
* Planning, coordinating and co-leading SL training
* Serving as the primary resource for support to SLs in the effective implementation of the Teaching for Results (TfR) seminar series
- Conduct and document regular structured observations of each SL to ensure quality of delivery of TfR sessions
- Provide ongoing support to SLs by offering resources and tools and sharing "best practices"
- Support SLs in related responsibilities, including guidance on prescriptive plans, TfR projects, participant evaluation, and administrative tasks
- Provide feedback to SLs on completed Fellow progress reports and final evaluations
- Work with SLs to develop prescriptive plans for Fellows who are not meeting expectations, and regularly monitor progress according to these plans
* Collaborating with GTF Site Directors and TNTP central team Site Advisors to collect and analyze Fellows' student achievement data in order to understand Fellow effectiveness and use student outcomes to make certification decisions
* Actively participating in the certification decision process based on Assessments of Classroom Effectiveness
* Contributing to organizational initiatives to improve instruction, including instructor quality, backward design implementation, and curricular knowledge development
2. Prepare and execute a high quality pre-service summer training Institute by
* Leading the recruitment, on-boarding and management of Institute Staff
* Planning, coordinating and co-leading Institute staff training
* Coordinating with school district partners to secure space and additional resources to support summer training
* Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the training Institute
* Customizing the implementation of TNTP's curricular framework
* Overseeing Fellow performance management and evaluation
3. Build program relationships with key stakeholders, including school administrators, curriculum specialists, and school based mentors, in order to build investment and support of Georgia Teaching Fellows
4. Build and implement effective communication with active Fellows
* Act as the main program contact person for Fellow concerns (instructional and administrative)
* Promote connectivity among Fellows
* Ensure that each group of participants becomes a well connected cohort of teachers with a positive culture
5. Coordinate classroom observations of Fellows and identify sources of support and professional development by
* Managing the program's school year observers and ensuring that all Fellows receive timely feedback on classroom teaching
* Collecting, tracking, and analyzing Fellow performance data and trends
The Training and Instruction Manager will report to the Georgia Site Director. This position offers the successful candidate the opportunity to have a profound impact on how teachers are prepared to teach in schools in Georgia.
Qualifications

Compensation
The annual salary for this full-time position is $60,000 or commensurate with experience in a similar position with the potential of a performance based bonus.
